Japanese shoji
Original Japanese sliding doors from Berlin
Your Shoji from Takumi:
We manufacture authentic shoji screens for you in first-class Japanese quality.
Or, if you prefer, modern, "Europeanized" shoji with unusual designs and innovative materials. Each door is custom-made for you, exactly according to your wishes.
The material:
We build our shoji from selected high-quality solid woods:
Silver fir, pine, spruce, larch, hemlock, western red cedar. Other woods available on request. We select the best wood for our shoji ourselves at the sawmills. Straight, slow-grown, and with a fine striped grain.
The craft:
Traditionally designed, built with a great deal of craftsmanship and care:
We know and use centuries-old craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology. All corner joints of the shoji are mortised, the muntin frames are laminated. Everything is stable, durable, and fits perfectly.
The surfaces
smooth planed, all colors, natural, oiled
Our shoji surfaces are finished (planed). This is the traditional and most natural surface—much smoother than sanded, and resistant to dust and dirt.
On request, we can also stain, oil, wax, or glaze your shoji.
The covering:
From traditional fine paper to tear-proof high-tech composite materials
- Shoji paper: traditional covering paper
- MADOCA: tear-resistant shoji paper
Shoji?
Shoji are wooden frames covered with translucent paper that are installed as sliding frames on the windows in Japanese houses. In Japan, shoji fulfill the same function as our curtains, providing privacy at the window while reducing drafts and providing additional heat and sound insulation.
In large rooms such as temples, ryokans, palaces, and meeting rooms, shoji are also used in Japan as room dividers and flexible partitions. Shoji walls can not only be easily moved, but also completely removed, allowing for variable room layouts.
Shoji are not used as cabinet fronts or room doors in Japan. Traditionally, fusuma or Western-style room doors are used for this purpose.
Shoji in Europe
Shoji have become known in Europe as "Japanese sliding doors."
Shoji screens are particularly well suited to spacious rooms: hotels, meeting rooms, lofts, halls, and townhouses. They can fulfill a variety of functions in Western interiors: curtains, drapes, shutters, partitions, room dividers, and passage doors.
